It is surprising the type and volme of info that is kept by companies and agencies about many people on computer systems and even in traditional paper files. Of course the new technologies mean that now data can be passed around between computer databases without your agreement or knowledge. This can be useful for governments for things like tracking criminals, but potentially invades everyones privacy. Lots of organisations are concerned about what information is held and where, and who might then get access to the info at a later date. It could of course be used for something entirely different, sometimes called data creep. Businesses and agencies do legitimately hold such information of course, and for our benefit and to make things easier. Our health records for example are very important and should be secret, but they are held for our benefit and could save us so they need to be available. Some new websites reveal all kinds of info about us, they access some government and business records, for example reverse phone lookup searches. Tough to find in the past, such background information and reverse lookups are now quite easy to find and although useful it could be argued they infringe on peoples security and private data.
